PRESIDENT'S CORNER
Dear LJAA members and friends,
Can you believe the summer is over and we are preparing for the holiday season already?
The response to our current Black & White show has been spectacular, including the shoulder-to-shoulder reception on the evening of September 24.
Congratulations to Lev Tsimring, whose photograph "Afghanistan Girl, 50 Years Later," took first place in the show. If you have not made some time to stop by and see this very professional exhibition, it will remain in the gallery through October 10. I want to extend a hearty thank you to Jeff Brosbe for organizing our 1st Annual Black & White Show and hope that the 2nd Annual Black & White will be equally as good, if not better.
October will be a busy month for member artists who are participating in all the outside exhibit venues that Aimee Jo has lined up for us. From the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival to a weekend exhibit the Welks Resort and a charity auction, there are several opportunities for members to display or donate work. This is also a great time to contact Aimee Jo and volunteer to staff one of these venues. The Exhibition Director can always use extra helping hands.
Finally, the LJAA Website Development Team is working with Arthur Wang to redesign our website. We hope to have a totally new look to our online presence within the next couple of months.
We expect our home page to be visually pleasing for members and visitors to our website. Check into the website from time to time so that you can catch news of upcoming events and to see how it changes. http://www.lajollaart.org/
Creatively yours,
Kris deYoung LJAA President president@lajollaart.org

FROM THE EXHIBITION DIRECTOR
LJAA will have a booth at the La Jolla Art and Wine Festival on October 9 and 10. Members who sent me JPG samples by September 30 must sit in the booth for a minimum of 2 hours on one of the days; admission is free. This is an excellent opportunity to converse with art lovers in La Jolla and spread the word about LJAA.
A heart-felt thank you to those who have made donations to the Shakti Rising Holiday benefit! Your contributions are making the event possible. LJAA volunteers will be providing art classes for the young women of Shakti Rising during the month of October. Donations of acrylic paint, jewelry beads/materials, old magazines, and calligraphy pen.
Interested in participating in the Welks Resort Oktoberfest Art Walk on October 23 and October 24? Please email me at exhibitions@lajollaart.org. There is no charge to participate and the resort is offering an excellent discount for participating artists wishing to stay overnight ($129 plus tax for a villa suite).
Sincerely,
Aimee Jo Exhibitions Director exhibitions@lajollaart.org

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR
In September we welcomed a new member, Lee Allen.
(Photo right by Lee Allen: "Havana, Cuba: children playing on stage")
A big thank you to Roberta Henson for her continous attendance at the board meetings and her personal support for the LJAA.
Please join our monthly board meetings. It is a great chance to find out what ways you can get involved with LJAA for exhibitions and volunteer work. Our October board meeting will be at the LJAA Gallery on Monday, October 11 starting at 6:30pm. (New membership applicants' presentations start at 6pm.)
Membership business note: "All exhibiting members are required to serve a minimum of 6 hours per year," which is stated on our 2010 Membership Renewal Instruction. Despite your current Volunteer Hours (VHs) status, every member (except exempted members) must perform 6 hours of volunteer service a year.
If you are one of 14 members who have not done any volunteer service this year and have not responded to my personal emails, please make sure that you fulfill this 6-VH requirement by the end of this year. Or you will receive a bill for $60 (1VH equals $10) as a donation to the LJAA. If you staff a gallery for 1 day, that is all it takes to complete this annual requirement.
A few shows coming up before the end of December need gallery sitters. If you are interested, please contact our Exhibition Director Aimee Jo (exhibitions@lajollaart.org) for the galley staffing schedule. If you would like to refresh your memory of the gallery sitting, please contact Doreen DiPasquale (rddp@msn.com), our Gallery Training Director, who conducts the gallery orientation for our members.
If you are one of 15 members who have a few more volunteer hours to go this year, attending a board meeting can also be a good way to earn a few VH credits (1 hour equals 1 VH).
In the meantime, on our home page, the "Volunteer Hours Program instruction" has been updated (http://www.lajollaart.org/about_ljaa/VH_about.html). We have also created a list of "LJAA Organizational Oversight Structure" (http://www.lajollaart.org/about_ljaa/committees.html). And our "LJAA Membership Guide" has been updated (http://www.lajollaart.org/about_ljaa/membership.html). Please take a look at pages to refresh your memory about LJAA and your membership requirements and benefits.
On our home page, we have also implemented a "Calendar" link, which shows exhibitions, events, workshops, and meetings dates (https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=lajollaartassociation@gmail.com)
On a personal note, I am looking for a member who is interested in a Membership Director position starting next June. Basic tasks are processing new membership applicants, membership renewals, updating member rosters, and keeping volunteer hours records up to date on our website. I am looking forward to receiving any inquiries.
All the best,
Fujiko Isomura LJAA Membership Director membership@lajollaart.org

LJAA HISTORY NEWS ITEM
From Managing the La Jolla Art Association- History of the La Jolla Art Association
"The La Jolla Art Association proposes to stand out strongly for the type and quality of painting they wish to represent; never to be confined to the one small segment of art, nor to follow any eccentric trends of the moment. Good art must always be the basic pattern to follow, although stable progress and change is always necessary."
Best wishes, Harold Dozier LJAA Historian historian@lajollaart.org

 JEROME LIPETZKY IN MEMORIUM
Jerome Lipetzky passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, on September 7.
He
requested that his passing be recognized with a celebratory gathering
of those whose paths he crossed on his journey though life. All are
welcome to attend this celebration, which will be held at El Monte Park
in Picnic Area 4, beginning at noon on Saturday, October 2.
Some LJAA member thoughts:
"Not only was Jerry a wonderful artist, he was a truly good human being. We were in several shows together and he was always cooperative, good-humored and more than willing to contribute his share to making the show a success. I feel privileged to have known him and he will be sorely missed." ---John Valois
I did not know Jerry well at all but did talk with him from time to time. I knew he had an illness which he expected to be terminal. He chose to go on painting, exhibiting, and generally being a good guy. And Jerry had a wonderful smile." ---Caroline Morse
"Unfortunately, I only chatted with Jerome once, at Tony Cuban's memorial service. He seemed very kind." ---Carole Duebbert
"He was a lovely kind man, who also happened to be an award-winning excellent painter." ---Kris deYoung
