Kris deYoung-Pres' CornerPRESIDENT'S CORNER

Dear LJAA Members and Friends,

This month we welcome the Southern California spring season of fresh growth, flowers, rain, and wind. For those who love the outdoors, this is your time to clean out your art tool box, grab your easel, put on your outdoor gear, and head out for plein air studies and masterpieces. Personally, I prefer my camera and computer for capturing scores of images as oil painting studies. Whatever your process, now is the time to forgive yourself for past inertia, embrace creative renewal, and move forward. What comes to mind is Rembrandt's quote. "Choose only one Master...Nature." Or Cezanne's comment about nature,: "What is one to think of those fools who tell one that the artist is always subordinate to nature? Art is in harmony parallel with nature."

Whether you think of nature as your master, inspiration, or parallel to your life development, we all share the joy of being part of a "tribe" of fellow travelers in this creative process called art. Thank you for being a part of La Jolla Art Association and promoting our mission to advance appreciation of the arts in Southern California. I am looking forward to seeing you at an upcoming reception, "Share Your Art" seminar, or board meeting.

More free information about plein air painting (and other useful tips) can be found at   http://painting.about.com/od/landscapes/a/plein_air_paint.htm.

Respectfully,

Kris deYoung

FROM THE EXHIBITION DIRECTOR

FruitSharon Ford has been working tirelessly to bring to life Tony Cuban's vision of an artist's cookbook.  Entitled "No Starving Artists Here!", it is in the final stages of development. Our next gallery exhibition will complement this work in progress. All members and non-members are welcome to participate. The show is called "A Celebration of Culinary Delights." It will begin March 14 and run through April 3.

Please email exhibitions@lajollaart.org  if you are interested in participating in the show. All subjects pertaining to food, wine, dining, agriculture, gathering together, and cooking, are welcome. Colorful abstractions also welcome. No size restrictions. Each piece under 24" is $30. Larger than 24" is $50. A 15% price break will be given for entering multiple pieces. All work will be automatically considered for cookbook inclusion with proper credit given to the artists. Cookbooks should be ready at this exhibition's reception. And the food is bound to be delicious. Don't miss out on this fun event. Reserve your space now.

Thank you,

Aimee Jo

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

One of our new members' artwork did not appear in the January newsletter. I would like to introduce a sample of Maria Parenteau's work (http://www.artwedeliver.com ), "The Winter Sparrows And The Japanese Ladies" (watercolors on panel, 26x42).

Our non-board members Doris Dickinson and Roberta Henson participated the February board meeting. Thank you Doris and Roberta for your time and support. Our board meetings is held only once a month, and we wish that many members will get a chance to come see us in action this year. It is a casual atmosphere and both board members and regular members sit together. Please do not hesitate to join us, as well as voice your thoughts and opinions.

The March board meeting will be at the LJAA Gallery on Monday, March 14 starting at 6:30pm. (New membership applicants' presentations start at 6pm.)

The 2011 LJAA membership renewal ended as of February 28. Thank you all for renewing your membership with us. Despite some changes in the membership rules this year, the same percentage of members have renewed their membership once again. It is also quite encouraging to see that our members are eager to participate.  We still need more gallery staffing volunteers throughout the year. If you find that gallery sitting is enjoyable, please sign up for more dates and help support our LJAA.

We are presently looking for a new Membership Director who can start this coming June. If anybody is interested in this position please contact me. With new membership rules now in place, I am expecting the tasks of the Membership Director become much simpler than before!

Best Wishes,

Fujiko Isomura

LJAA Membership Director

FROM THE LJAA HISTORIAN

Valentien Matilija PoppiesAnna Valentien... During the financially tough times, 1913, Anna started a career in education. This would enable her husband to continue work on the commission for E. B. Scripps. He was commissioned to paint 1100 sheets with 1500 specimens to include trees, grasses, and ferns. (image right: "Matilija Poppies" by A.R. Valentien) Anna was instructor of Elementary Manual Training and Arts and Crafts at San Diego State Normal School from 1914 to 1916. Her skills were listed as follows: Woodcarving, Weaving, Beadwork, Modeling, Metal Craft, Leather Craft, Basketry, Jewelry, Batik, Glista Glass, Macrame, Wicker Work, Oil Painting, and Ink Drawing. At the Panama California Exposition in 1915, Anna received a collaborative Gold Medal for the Arts and Craft Exhibit. In 1917 while teaching crafts at San Diego Evening High School, Anna was approached by a young Donal Hord, who requested to be taught the techniques of sculpture. Never wishing to compete with her husband, her work was usually displayed in the women's section of exhibition. Anna retired in June of 1938. She passed away in August of 1947 at age 85. She touched the lives of countless students.

artheartART IN THE HEART OF RANCHO BERNARDO IS BACK

Starting with March 23 (the third Wednesday of the month from 4pm to 6pm), Sharon Ford and her partner Virginia Kuwahara at UBS Financial Services will begin their monthly artist receptions as a outreach program in the Rancho Bernardo area. All are invited. On March 23, the artist reception will feature Marc McVey, Barbara McVey, and Theresa Newbern. This year's series of monthly meetings by the "Art in the Heart of RB" group at UBS will have a slightly different twist. They are calling it "The Art of Retiring." Not only are they introducing local artists at the complimentary receptions, they will also bring in speakers to address pressing problems that we all face as we near retirement or are in retirement; for example, "How to make your nest egg last a lifetime," "Everything you wanted to know but didn't know who to ask about Social Security and Medicare," "Being prepared for Retirement," or "How to enjoy retirement despite becoming suddenly single." If you would like to get more information about these events, please contact Sharon Ford at sharon.ford@ubs.com  for a list of times and events. Receptions are held at UBS Financial Services (17140 Bernardo Center Drive, Suite #350, San Diego CA 92128 Suite, 858-521-7000).
