PRESIDENT'S CORNERLJAA 2009 Annual Membership Meeting - Rodger Presenting

Greetings Fellow Artists and Friends,

Here in San Diego, the calendar may say winter, but spring has already begun. For me, spring brings visions of renewal, birds singing, flowers blooming, and refreshing breezy days. Just as the plants and animals survived winter, I can happily report that LJAA has also survived a long anxious winter.

We have added new members to the board, who are bringing fresh ideas and energy to our historic organization. Just like the seasons, we have had to change. For some, this change has been scary and for others it has been exciting.

I believe that LJAA can move on to a new time and place, breathing  fresh visions into our organization, while retaining our core mission of providing a venue for emerging and mature artists to exhibit their work, as well as providing free art ducation to the community through classes and support of children's art. I believe in the importance of creativity in our lives, that is why I have taken on this volunteer job for you. And I would love to hear from each of you personally, what being a member of the LJAA means to you.

Enjoy the coming spring and success in your creative activities.

Respectfully yours,

Kristine deYoung

tony Aimee Jo Fahrner AITHORBIN MEMORIAM: TONY CUBAN

Quoted from Tony's memorial service:

"Tony, born in 1934, grew up in the inner-city of Pittsburgh. As a child, he loved going to arts and craft classes at Heinz House. He dreamed of being an artist some day. After four years in the Navy, a wife, a son and daughter, his art consisted of drafting and designing. Tony was always willing to supply (for free and fun) his art experise to anyone who needed it. At retirement age (he didn't retire), he joing a couple of art groups and started to paint again and enjoyed every last moment of it. He stopped painting on February 10, 2010."

Some personal testimonials:

"Tony was one of the nicest people I ever met. He was kind to everyone who came into the gallery and always helpful to fellow artists. His smiling face and upbeat attitude made you feel welcome and at home."
          ---judy judy judy

"Tony was a valuable member of LJAA. His dedication, original ideas, and creativity enhanced our organization. He came up with clever ideas at a moment's notice. Dearly missed, he will be."
          ---Salli Sachse

AS TIME GOES BY

aqua dividerYesterday I was a child
Close by my mother's side.
What would I grow up to be?
In a world that seemed so wide.

I look back at memories
That seem to be unclear
Some of them I hold inside;
While others disappear.

The years flew by too quickly
And now are almost gone.
I walk toward another place;
It seems I have been drawn.

How could I have grown old so fast?
Did I do something wrong?
What happened to that eager child
Who used to be so strong?

signageLA JOLLA SHORES / LJAA SIGNAGE COMPETITION

We have been offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to let our creative imaginations run wild. The merchants and business people of La Jolla Shores have decided that their main goal for 2010 is to find representative signage. Together with La Jolla Art Association, they are organizing a competition; open to all artists, to find the right design vision for the La Jolla Shores community.

There will be a two week-show, featuring all submissions, at the LJAA Gallery, with reception. Residents of La Jolla will be invited to vote for their favorite. Extensive media coverage is planned. A further private show/reception will be held mid-September, for the merchants, businesses and board of La Jolla Shores, during which awards for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be determined. In addition to the enormous prestige and amount of publicity the winner will receive, formal plaques of recognition will be presented to the top three by Mayor Jerry Sanders, together with generous gift certificates from the local businesses. If you would like to participate in this design competition, please download and fill out this application form. Should you require more information, please email your request to Monica Cadish.

ranchobernardoART IN THE HEART OF RANCHO BERNARDO

Sponsored by UBS Financial Services Inc. and presented by Sharon Ford

In 2010 Sharon Ford, an active member of LJAA and a Financial Advisor with UBS, is presenting a series of introductions to local artists by means of an artist's reception. She calls it "Art in the Heart of Rancho Bernardo." The events are scheduled for the fourth Wednesday of each month. The next event is on Wednesday, March 24 from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at the UBS Rancho Bernardo office (17140 Bernardo Center Dr. Suite 350, San Diego CA 92128). The featured artists include Monica Cadish, Fujiko Isomura, George Galaich, and Aimee Jo Fahrner. The public is welcome. This venue allows the financial community to give back to the community and support the visual arts by introducing the public to accomplished local artist. Refreshments will be served.

Aimee Jo Fahrner AITHORBAbout the Featured Artists:

George Galaich (image right) is a resident of Rancho Bernardo. His style of artwork is known as digital art (all done with computers). George's artwork can be summarized as abstract energetic images with vivid colors and shapes that race across the canvas.

Fujiko Isomura
: Mixed media is the type of Fujiko's artwork. That term applies to the technique and her style. She uses a mixture of old and new icons from two cultures to create whimsical and unique paintings. She also uses the ancient technique of "gold leaf" for many of her modern (almost pop art) paintings. (image left)

Aimee Jo Fahrner AITHORB

Aimee Jo Fahrner
is an acrylic artist. Her painting style is called abstract expressionism. There is a complex design created with every layer of texture, color and/or brush strokes. Together the process of the creation "expresses" an interesting depiction of the subject matter. (image right)

Aimee Jo Fahrner AITHORB

Monica Cadish's
favorite medium is oil. She is a full time artist. Monica uses vibrant colors and unique designs to illustrate the subject of her paintings. She has a variety of styles but often there is a subtle message depicted from her use of shapes and colors. (image above left)

You're invited to the NCSFA Sponsored Bus Trip to (these are always fabulous) Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Saturday, May 8 (the day before Mother's Day).

There are 2 ticketed exhibitions at LACMA, namely "Renoir in the 20th Century" and "American Story", represented by 11 masterpieces including Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, John Singer Sargent and George Bellows. $55 for North County Society of Fine Arts members or $60 for non-members; covers bus fare, tip for the driver, admission to museum and its 2 ticketed exhibits, bottled water, refreshments, research paper and a video relevant to what we'll see.

There will be 2 sites for departure and return. Sundance Stage Lines bus will be in the Target Center parking area on Pomerado Rd. in Poway at 8:45 am and scheduled to depart at 9:00am for the Park and Ride on the northeast side of Interstate 5 at La Costa Ave. in Carlsbad, arriving around 9:30am. Return to San Diego by 8pm.

Exhibits: The Renoir exhibit focuses on his last 3 decades, when he was looking beyond Impressionism. I say looking beyond, but it was also a look back to classicism. And, as one art period changes to another, here from Impressionism to Modernism, the new artists, such as Picasso, Matisse and Bonnard looked at what they called Renoir's "last manner" with admiration and ran it through their art filter. For that reason, you will see works by Picasso, Matisse, Maillol and Bonnard interspersed among the 80 paintings, sculptures and drawings.

To secure your reservation: If interested please reply to Valerie Raymond at valraymond@cox.net. 40 spaces are available.

Your check made out to NCSFA to: NCSFA, P.O. Box 291, Poway CA 92074 secures your reservation. Please include your: 1) choice of pick up site and 2) your e-mail address or phone number for reservation confirmation.

"Painting Flowers"

    ---Artist: Salli Sache

Award-winning artist Salli Sachse, will demonstrate flower painting at the LJAA gallery on May 22, 2010 at 10:30am. Salli fell in love with flowers when she lived in Holland. During winter months, flowers adorned  window sills, raising spirits until the days became longer. The play of light on those petals were a fascination and Salli now translates that light on canvas. Come see and enjoy.

budgetNEW "ON A BUDGET" EXHIBITING OPTION

LJAA is trying something different in the gallery for the month of March and then the month of April. Already, four artists have signed up to rent a wall (or sculpture pedestals) in the gallery for the month of March.

Below is a map that shows how the gallery is divided into numbered wall spaces that are with dollar amounts next to them. Walls numbered 4, 5, 5.5 and 10,  plus all the sculpture pedestals are rented out for March. Which leaves some walls available, if want to enjoy this rare low cost opportunity. If you have an artist friend, who is not a LJAA member,  that might be interested, they can also rent a wall, but will have to pay twice as much as members do. Also, space borders are negotiable... let's talk.

Gallery Zone Map

We will be hanging our work in the gallery on Monday evening March 1, then discussing our reception date,  and what we want to do for advertising (posters, postcards, media contacts, etc.)  Since I have become the de facto Exhibition Director, I will be guiding and assisting in this month long show, plus organizing the gallery sitting, the email lists and other admin responsibilities. You will only have to staff the gallery two or three times the entire month, send me a list of work you would like to hang, so we can make labels for you, and provide a jpg image of you work, if you have one, for advertising purposes. If you want to do more to help, or just staff the gallery and not show work, you can earn many extra volunteer hours.

You are invited to join us in March, but if April is better for you, then we will repeat with a different set of artists that month. If this goes well, and there is a good response we will try this again in the fall. Let me know what you would like to do, as soon as you can. Please RSVP with comments, so I can get organized for you ahead of time.
