LJAA 2009 Annual Membership Meeting - Rodger PresentingAs LJAA begins its 93rd year, my thoughts turn to all of you, our amazingly talented and diverse members, along with your supportive families and friends. Each of your time and creative contributions to our beautiful gallery and artistic programs are what make us one of the most premier art associations in the San Diego area. I feel pride and gratitude for your giving me the opportunity this past year to serve LJAA with you. Interesting and dynamic plans are in the works for 2010. You'll hear about them at our 2nd annual Early Bird Social at Coco's UTC on Saturday, January 9. I hope to see each of you there.

FROM THE MEMBERSHIP DIRECTOR

First, I would like to welcome our new member, Helena (Xin) Liu, who joined us in December. The total number of the 2009 LJAA membership became a record number of 137, including 43 new members.

Thank you non-board members who participated in the December Board Meeting for your time and support: Judy Bengson, Monica Cadish, Doreen diPasquale, Aimee Jo Fahrner, George Galaich, Roberta Henson, Ann Walker. Fresh ideas and feedback from regular members have been quite valuable.

I would also like to thank each one of you who sent me friendly support as well as prompt responses when I needed your responses. I went to art school but did not learn how to become a successful membership director. I am still learning about my job and all I can do is try my best to make things fair and easier for all of us using my limited volunteer time. I appreciate your understanding and continuous supports so very much.

Now about some business. The deadline for the 2010 Membership Renewal is on January 31, 2010.  (By now all of you should have received a snail mail renewal package.)  Please note that there will be no grace period. Any renewal made after January 31 needs to be aqua divideraccompanied with the $25 late fee. If you have any questions, by all means please write to me at membership@lajollaart.org. You may also bring the renewal form and the dues to the January Social on Saturday, January 9 at 3pm at UTC Coco's.

Our next board meeting will be on Monday, January 11 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Membership applicants' presentations start at around 6pm. Please join us! Each one of you is absolutely welcome.

May the New Year bring better and bigger opportunities full of creativity, new friends, good health, wealth, happiness, strength, wisdom, and heart-warming encounters throughout the year.

Best wishes,
Fujiko Isomura

xmasparade LJAA PARTICIPATES IN THE LA JOLLA CHRISTMAS PARADE

Aimee Jo FahrnerPictured in the 1936 Cadillac is the LJAA contribution to this years' La Jolla Christimas Parade. Pierce Harrah each year organizes the members to participate in the parade.(Pierce Is pictured with Kris deYoung in the back seat and Sharon Ford in the front seat.)

Aimee Jo FahrnerSalli Sachse dresses up like an artist (of course) and walks along the parade route waving to the children and adults that line the streets. The 1936 Cadillac convertilble, owned by Eugene Calman, was the star of the parade. Eugene has provided antique cars to the LJAA for the past few years for this community event. It is a fun event that allows La Jolla to know LJAA a little better. Thanks to all the members that participated.

aimeejoAIMEE JO FAHRNER SOLO SHOW A BIG SUCCESS!
Aimee Jo Fahrner
One of our newer members, Aimee Jo, pulled off a solo art show (November 8 to November 22) that proved to be one of the most successful art shows for LJAA in 2009. It was called "Flooding Consciousness" and she sold four paintings. Way to go Aimee Jo! When asked what words of wisdom she could share with other artists about her success, she humbly stated that she had a lot of help from fellow members and friends.

Aimee Jo wants express her appreciation to all the members who helped her during those two weeks. She feels the La Jolla Art Association is a great group to be associated with at this time in her career as an artist. We all know how much work it is to prepare for a show. It is nice to be rewarded financially and to be recognized for one's efforts. Aimee Jo Fahrner is a very nice addition to LJAA.

WHO AM I WHEN I'M NOT AN ARTIST?

Helena (Xin) Liu
Teacher | Designer | Artist

I was a teacher and designer when I was on the way to being an artist.

I was born and raised in Guangzhou, China. During my childhood, I received early art training from Yi Ping, who was a famous contemporary artist in China. My artwork was prominently displayed in my schools' art galleries. Qi Baishi and Wu Changshuo were two famous traditional artists whose art work had a strong influence on my Chinese paintings.

Since 1999, I have been a teacher who worked at the Preschool of Bureau of Air-Force in Guangzhou for six years. I enjoyed my teaching children drawing at class and I thought my best ability was art. I spent my free time to continue art education at Guangzhou Light Industrial University and improving my education in Chinese painting, Fung Shui, environmental design and commercial art design. I got the Certificate for International Commercial Art Designer in 2005.

Aimee Jo FahrnerIt was an honor to work as a main designer for prestigious engineering design master Mo Bozhi, Hong Kong architect Steve Leung, and some other famous designers after 2005. Under their leadership, I worked on a wide range of design projects, which include hotels, museums, offices, and restaurants. Completed projects included many cities in China and overseas.

English horn & OboeI came to San Diego in 2008. I just finished my CS4 training program at City College, and I am currently teaching art at the Chinese School of San Diego.

I am very proud to be a new member of LJAA and I am currently interested in combining both Eastern and Western artistic styles into my paintings.

For more details about my artwork, please visit my website: www.helenaliu.org.

Mark Donnelly
Graphic Designer
| Musician | Artist

In 1991, I opened a graphic design studio known as M-Squared Productions. Most of my time during the day is now spent taking care of the advertising needs of more than a dozen restaurants in New York City, Ft. Lauderdale and here in San Diego.

In the evenings, and often weekends as well, I turn in my artist's smock for a tux and play oboe and English horn (pictured right) with 3 different southern California orchestras. In addition to my regular position with the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra, I also play regularly with El Centro's Imperial Valley Symphony and occasionally with Grossmont Symphony. In 2009, I was honored to have the Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra (TICO) present the world premier of my first original orchestral composition, "Amarna". I was further honored that several members of the LJAA attended the performance.

SIDE NOTE: Carole Duebbert used to play viola with TICO.

aqua divider UPCOMING CLASSES & EVENTS

San Diego Art Guild (SDAG) New Year's Day Event: Kirkos Labyrinth. SDAG member Kirkos, internationally known environmental artist, will begin creating a labyrinth at 10am on New Year's Day 2010. He is dedicating this meditation labyrinth to the guild in appreciation of their support of his art. Guests and participants are requested to park in the Moonlight Beach parking lot and walk north about a mile and a half to the labyrinth. NOTE: The actual beach is not named on purpose. The City of Encinitas has asked that the name of the beach where this public event will be taking place not be given out. Apparently this event was too successful last New Years Day and created a over-crowded parking problem for the homes directly above the beach. The public is invited to bring gifts for the labyrinth. Items must be biodegradable such as flowers, colored stones, and coarse salt. (Glass is prohibited on the beach.)  Please do not bring anything that will need to be picked up at the end of the event. This is an interactive event and will take hours to complete.
