PRESIDENT'S CORNERLJAA 2009 Annual Membership Meeting - Rodger Presenting

Dear LJAA Artists and Friends,

It is unbelievable how quickly this first month of 2010 has flown by, but your hard working members and board have already planned many activities and starting filling in our exhibition schedule for the year.

As exhibiting members, you are encouraged and entitled to show your artwork in our gallery. This is an excellent way to get the experience of planning and setting up a show, which will include marketing your exhibit to the public and your patrons, contacting media outlets with a press release, and getting help with your reception. You also become very practiced at the correct way to prepare your work before delivering it to the gallery, learning how to artfully hang your work to utilize the available lighting, coordinate colors, subject manner, framing or mediums.

If you are still unsure of how to proceed, contact a member whose artwork you admire or who has had the experience of putting on a show. Someone will be happy to help you or join with you to put on a successful multi-person show. Exhibition guidelines (which are posted on our website http://www.lajollaart.org), give you more details about what to do. If you want to find out what time periods are still available for this year, contact Tony Cuban or look at the Exhibition Schedule from our main website.

See you at the next reception...

socialEARLY BIRD SOCIAL AT COCO'S

Twenty-five members and six companions attended the second Early Bird Social on January 9 at UTC Coco's. Our new and current board members were introduced as well as some of this year's exciting exhibition plans and projects. Old and new members interacted each other over a Coco's Original Burger, Asian Chicken Salads, Fish and Chips, and Classic Breakfast. We all had a delightful afternoon.

It was very nice to see many familiar faces at the January Early Bird Social at Coco's. If you could not make it, no worry. In a few months or so we will have our Annual All Members Meeting! Or you are always welcome to attend the receptions, workshops, and the monthly board meeting.

Thank you very much to the non-board members who participated in the January LJAA board meeting: Patricia Jasper-Clark, Doreen DiPasquale, Roberta Henson, Helena (Xin) Liu, and a guest volunteer participant Alayn Palacio. It is always delightful to see new faces and returning faces at the meeting. Forming a fellowship through art is a fantastic experience, not to mention getting a chance to build a special friendship.

The 2010 Membership Renewal took place in December and in January. Any renewal after February 1 requires a $25 late fee.

This year, I would love to suggest to all of us to invite our artist friends in town to join the LJAA:  more members, more artwork, more shows, more friends, more visitors, more exposures, more excitement!

Our next monthly board meeting will be on Monday, February 8 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. All members are more than welcome.  Join us, meet your new artist friends, and get involve with the LJAA!

Best wishes,
Fujiko Isomura

The LJAA got front page billing on the front page article (Section B) in the La Jolla Light and Del Mar Times next to the Athenaeum and the La Jolla Playhouse.

Some LJAA History

Mrs. Eleanor Parkes was the first President of the LJAA. The bylaws stated that the terms would be for three years with a reelection for second term allowed; however, at the recommendation of Miss Scripps, Mrs. Parkes continued for thirty four years as President of LJAA. Miss Scripps had every confidence in the work and character of Mrs. Parkes, quite confident that the Association would be best represented and led through the difficult times by Mrs. Eleanor Parkes. portraitsubjectsNEED TO IDENTIFY PORTRAIT SUBJECTS

Duebber Vancouver PhotoRichard Warner is still on the hunt to find the identities of his recent portrait work. Working from a photo that he took last November/December, this recently finished work shows two people sitting on a bench outside the La Jolla Athenaeum in the sun. The couple had recently moved to the San Diego area in the last one or two years and was originally from Michigan. If you know them, please let Richard know by phone (858-459-7435) or email (rswarner1@san.rr.com). The painting is oil on canvas and measures 18" by 24" It also recently won recognition from the San Diego Portrait Society and one of the best of the month. Your assistance in locating the subjects is greatly appreciated.

galleryspacesGALLERY SPACES AVAILABLE

Artist Austin Casson is opening a fine arts gallery in Old Town Temecula. The location and facility are superb and in close to the cultural arts center of town. It is an upstairs location that was designed to be a gallery and is 910 sq. ft. with 12' ceilings. Austin is looking for a co-op arrangement with 8 to 12 juried primary artists in a wide range of fine art diciplines. Smaller space will be available for small groupings and unique works. I have room outside on a beautiful New Orleans looking deck for larger works that would not be prone to theft. Space prices will range from $35.00 to $150.00, depending on need.
